Self-Counsel Press requires an experienced publicist to create and execute dynamic US and Canadian publicity plans. The successful candidate will work closely with the Marketing Manager, Editorial department and sales reps to build and maintain relationships with online and traditional media.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Developing strategic US and Canadian publicity campaigns for SCP’s strong and extensive backlist as well as 10 – 15 new titles each season
• Writing press releases, pitch letters and promotional materials
• Building and maintaining relationships with small business support organizations such as Chambers of Commerce and entrepreneur groups
• Building and maintaining relationships with small business and personal finance bloggers
• Maintaining, strengthening and developing relationships with online and traditional media
• Working closely with US and Canadian sales reps and distributors
• Supervising review copy mailings
• Maintaining publicity section of Self-Counsel Press website

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Must be an independent, creative thinker and be able to work in a team environment
• Excellent written and verbal skills
• Extremely organized
• Ability to identify and target particular demographics

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum 2 years experience in book publicity or comparable education (MPub)
• Strong command of social networking websites and other online tools

Our next Expert Talk will be on one of the most important aspects of getting books out of our warehouses and into the hands of customers: Sales Repping.

Sales reps are invaluable! Reps pitch our catalogues to booksellers, give them the information they need to handsell, and convey all the passion and love we have for our titles without being, well, creepy.

A good sales rep can make or break a book’s success, which is why we’re thrilled to have two of our industry’s best and brightest at our Sales Repping Expert Talk: Nadine Boyd and Dot Middlemass.

Nadine works with LPG (the Literary Press Group) and looks after the vast territory of BC, Alberta and NWT. Dot was awarded the Libris Award for Sales Rep of the Year by the CBA last year and is with Kate Walker & Co. They’ll both be on hand to answer all your questions about sales repping: how it works, and what reps need from us in order to sell our books.

Here are the details for the next meeting, which will be the very first in our series of Expert Talks!

We’re pleased to welcome Lianne Crawford of Indigo. Lianne is currently the Field Learning Consultant, and previous to that was the Regional Consultant and SAP specialist for western Canada. Before that, she managed the Broadway & Granville Chapters.

Lianne acts as a liason to publishers and has helped many of us navigate Indigo’s systems. She’s extremely approachable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic and I’m sure you’ll all learn lots from her!

So, please join us on Thursday, Sept 4 at 7:30 pm at the Legion (southwest corner of Main @23rd). Bring your questions. Dumb ones welcome – that’s what these sessions are all about.

Once again, a very productive BCUPS meeting. Unfortunately, your lowly scribe has not been nearly as productive with writing up the minutes. Ah, the publishing industry and its crazy deadlines. Head-hung-low apologies.

It was great to see some new faces and comforting to see the familiar ones. Our group seems to be growing!

We continued to discuss ideas for professional development and for what our members would like to see. We decided that we would invite speakers from the industry to attend our meetings and offer their sage advice and knowledge in exchange for beverages. We discussed several ideas for speakers and there were a bounty of suggestions, leading to the further suggestion that some of these may be panels …

Selina announced that our first speaker would be Lianne Crawford, Field Learning Consultant for Indigo, on September 4. There was rejoicing around the table. This should prove to be a very interesting session.

We would like to arrange to have a sales rep speak to us in October, ideally on October 2. Several were mentioned, including Dot Middlemass and Nadine Boyd. We’re working on this so stay tuned.

Another speaker we would love to see is someone to talk about the business and accounting side of publishing. Laraine has agreed to work her contacts on this one.

We also discussed inviting a freelance editor to speak.

We decided that we would split the contacting of speakers as we each have different contacts within the industry.

On another topic, Laraine also agreed to write a response to the document that came out of the last APBPC executive meeting. She also volunteered to contact the EAC about perhaps obtaining a discount on membership or workshops for our members.

Selina discussed pubfight and getting a Vancouver team together. Much has happened along these lines since this meeting so I will not dwell on it here. Go team go!

Last, but defiantly not least, we discussed a November party for publishers, booksellers, and other industry professionals to officially launch BCUPS and to work towards one of our objectives, which is building a stronger book community in Vancouver. We should look into securing a venue. Both the Biltmore and the Anza were mentioned as possibilities. We would like to stay away from charging for tickets and rather depend on beverage-sales promises to entice the venue into catering to us. We will discuss this further at the September meeting.
